How to Measure a Fence Correctly? 5 Rules Before Planning and Installation

Before you can design or build a fence, you need one thing: an accurate measurement. Most installation issues begin with errors in the early stages. Here are 5 key rules to measure your property and fence area like a pro.

1. Verify property boundaries :
Always check the legal boundaries of your plot. Use a cadastral map or physical boundary markers. A mistake here can lead to legal issues or needing to move the fence later.

2. Measure each side separately :
Very few plots are perfect rectangles. Measure each segment of the perimeter: front, back, sides, corners. If needed, note angles or irregular shapes to ensure accuracy.

3. Include gates and access points :
Plan gate and pedestrian access from the beginning. Note exact gate width (clear opening), opening direction, and available space. This ensures that your fence system is both aesthetic and functional.

4. Document height differences and terrain :
Terrain slope affects design and installation. Measure and record any incline or ground level changes. That way, your fence won’t end up misaligned or with open gaps.

5. Take reference photos :
Capture several photos from different angles. Photos help designers and installers understand the site remotely and prepare properly.

Summary :
Accurate measurement is the foundation for a good fence project. At Stalumo, we believe in precision from step one — because accuracy means no surprises later.
